LANSING – Unemployment in the Upper Peninsula increased in July to 6.2 percent. The statewide average was 5.4 percent.
The department of Management, Technology and Budget says 132,800 were employed in the U.P. in July, down 600 from a year ago and 400 from June. Those unemployed in July rose by 800.
The unemployment rate in Menominee County rose over the year by 0.8 of a percentage point due to layoffs in manufacturing, while the rate in Mackinac County edged up by 0.1 of a percentage point. Mackinac County had the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 3.6 percent.

Seventy-eight of Michigan’s 83 counties recorded seasonal jobless rate increases in July. Since July 2015, jobless rates fell in 81 counties, with a median reduction of a full percentage point.
