FAYETTE — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has opened a newly constructed boat dock for mooring along Snail Shell Harbor at Fayette Historic State Park in Delta County. Construction of the $3.1 million dock system began last fall.

Retired archaeologist says keep exploring Fayette State Park
FAYETTE – When John Halsey started digging at the Superintendent’s House at Fayette Historic State Park, he found flint chips, animal bones and a few pieces of pottery. It showed that Native Americans used Shell Harbor as a fishing spot long before residents of Fayette smelted iron ore.

Heritage Day at Fayette State Park features archaeology presentation
Heritage Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 13, at Fayette Historic State Park. The 19th-century-themed event celebrates Fayette’s rich iron smelting heritage. Troy Henderson with the Michigan History Center said retired state archaeologist John Halsey will talk about excavation work he has done at Fayette. “He had done numerous archaeological excavations at Fayette when he was working.
