SILVER CITY – A mother and son were found safe Wednesday at the Porcupine Mountain State Park after spending the night lost near Lake of the Clouds.
The Michigan State Police say a 37-year-old mother and her 11-year-old son were separated from the rest of the family on Tuesday when they attempted to take another route back to the parking lot. They were reported missing at about 9:30 p.m.
Troopers and park rangers were unable to locate the two Tuesday night. The search ended about 2 a.m.
The search resumed Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter joined the search. A State Police K-9 unit found the two at about 8:30 a.m. on the Carp River Trail about a half mile from where they were last seen.
Police say they were in good spirits and were reunited with their family.
Assisting in the search were Troopers from the Calumet State Police Post, U.S. Forest Service, Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Department and Ontonagon Community Emergency Response Team.
