LANSING – State Rep. Ed McBroom of Vulcan is among those that are being sued by two Republicans who were forced out of the Michigan Legislature in a sex scandal. Todd Courser of Lapeer and Cindy Gamrat of Plainwell claim their rights were violated during the investigation by House colleagues.
Courser is seeking more than $10 million in damages. Gamrat is seeking at least $25,000. They filed separate lawsuits last week in federal court.
Courser resigned from the House and Gamrat was expelled last year after an investigation led by McBroom found they had committed misconduct in covering up an extramarital affair.
McBroom was the chairman of the House Select Committee that considered the expulsion of the two representatives.
Courser now also faces criminal charges in connection to the scandal. He is accused of soliciting an aide to send a phony email to cover up an affair with Gamrat.
