Listen to the interview with Kaitlyn and Hannah Riesland about the Marquette Sentinels
MARQUETTE – The Marquette Sentinels junior girls hockey team is headed to Amherst, New York, for the U16 AA National Championships. The team won the state championship in Dearborn on March 16.
Hannah Riesland of Marquette is the goalie of the state championship team. She says they really came together towards the end of the season.
“We had a really rough start being a U16 team this year and playing U19 teams but we eventually got better. We really came together during the last two weekends we were on the road,” Hannah said.
Hannah enjoys the competitive nature of the game. She started playing goalie at age 9 and feels she has the ability to be mentally focused on the game.
“Just always being ready for anything that could happen, being able to pull your team up when they’re down and playing successful moments,” Hannah said about her contributions as the goalie of the team.
Help the Sentinels
Her sister Kaitlyn Riesland of Gladstone is an assistant coach with the team. She setup an online fundraising effort to help the Sentinels go to the national competition.
“We opened a Go Fund Me fundraising page. You can donate anything from $1 to as much as you would like to. We are going to use the money for expenses such as paying for the bus, hotel and food,” said Kaitlyn.
To make a donation, go to gofundme.com. The team leaves April 2.
The Sentinels are also holding a fundraising game March 30 against the Northern Michigan University Women’s Hockey Team. It will be held at 2 p.m. at the Berry Center.
