IRON MOUNTAIN – The Iron Mountain Police Department is launching an educational campaign to educate the public on the use of mopeds.
Director of Police and Fire Services for Iron Mountain, Ed Mattson, said it appears that many parents are ignorant to the laws or do not care. He says if a parent or guardian allows their child to operate a moped without a license, they can be issued a citation for allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a motor vehicle.
Mattson said if a driver does not have a driver’s license then they need a moped license that can be obtained from the Secretary of State. You must be at least 15 years old. Helmets are also required for those under 19 years old.
The Iron Mountain Police Department has received numerous complaints about groups of moped operators driving carelessly within the city.
