ESCANABA – Phil Griebel was selected to replace Ed Oswald as the Delta County Undersheriff.
Griebel has 19 years with the Delta County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Gary Ballweg says Griebel has the respect of the deputies in the department and is seen as a team player.
Oswald is retiring from the Sheriff’s Office after 10 years as Undersheriff and 22 years with the department. His final day is Saturday.
Griebel was one of four officers that Ballweg considered for the position. Griebel is a graduate of the Gladstone High School and Northern Michigan University Regional Police Academy. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from NMU.
He started as a corrections officers at the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department in Wisconsin. He joined the Delta County Sheriff’s Department in 1994 as a corrections officer and moved to road patrol in 1995. He obtained the rank of Sergeant in 2003 and Lieutenant in 2010.
Griebel served more than five years on the Gladstone City Commission and served as a high school basketball coach.
He begins his new position Sunday.
