ESCANABA – Escanaba Department of Public Safety reports a telephone scam in the area that supposedly comes from a public safety officer.
The scam involves a subject placing a call and identifying himself as an “officer” with the Escanaba Police Department. Det./Lt. Darin Hunter said the caller asks for a credit card to make a donation to help support wounded officers and families of officers killed in the line of duty.
Hunter said the origin of this call was found to be from Nevada and generated from telephone number 702-978-6925. The department, Hunter said, has never conducted such a solicitation.
Escanaba Public Safety said it is proud to be active in the community with a variety of charitable events, but soliciting over the telephone and asking for a credit card is never be done.
