St. IGNACE – A 40-year-old credit union manager in Mackinac County has been arrested for embezzlement.
The Michigan State Police say Briana Freel of Cedarville was arraigned Wednesday in Mackinac County District Court on on five felony charges including embezzlement of more $50,000 but less than $100,000, a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
The other charges are:
- forgery, a maximum of 14 years in prison
- use of a computer to commit a crime, a maximum of 10 years in prison
- larceny by false pretenses $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, a maximum of five years in prison
- and identity theft, a maximum of five years in prison
Freel was a loan officer and branch manager at the U.P. State Credit Union in Cedarville. The state police say they have been investigating several cases of embezzlement at the credit union.
Freel is free on bond. Her primlinary examination was waived and she was bound over to circuit court. Arraignment in Circuit Court is scheduled for June 19 at 2 p.m.
