BARAGA — Significant rainfall over several days has forced the early closure of campgrounds at Baraga State Park in Baraga County and Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Ontonagon County. The modern campgrounds at both parks were closed Wednesday for the remainder of the season.

Upper Peninsula man killed at Pearl Harbor buried in Ontonagon
ONTONAGON — The remains of an Upper Peninsula man killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 were buried in Ontonagon Saturday. Navy Fireman 2nd Class Lowell Earl Valley was 19 years old when the Japanese attacked the USS Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor.

Four U.P. projects along Michigan’s Iron Belle Trail receive development funds

Plan would end White Pine power plant’s SSR payments
LANSING – The Michigan Agency for Energy (MAE) today said it supports a plan by American Transmission Company (ATC) that would eliminate the SSR or system support resource payment for the White Pine electric generator in the Upper Peninsula. These SSR payments to White Pine are projected to cost U.P. ratepayers approximately $7.3 million each year. ATC’s proposal would allow similar reliability to be provided without running the White Pine plant. White Pine is a natural gas plant that is over 60 years old. U.P. ratepayers have been paying SSR payments to keep White Pine Unit 1 operating since 2014.
