MDOT urges U.P. drivers to heed road closures
NEWBERRY – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is reminding motorists to heed all weather-related road closures for their own safety and the safety of road maintenance crews. Recent harsh weather conditions in Marquette and Alger counties have created whiteout conditions and forced multiple closures of M-28 between the cities of Marquette and Munising in the Upper Peninsula.

U.P. Scout finds beauty along Lake Superior, affects of fire on North Country Trail
GRAND MARAIS – Matt Knudsen, 16, of Escanaba started out from Taquamonen Falls on August 7 and backpacked to Grand Marais along the North Country Trail in five days. The more than 50 mile backpacking trip with his Boy Scout Troop took him through the burned area of the Duck Lake Fire along Lake Superior.

Prescribed burn scheduled for Seney National Wildlife Refuge
SENEY – A portion of the Marshland Wildlife Drive at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge will be closed Friday for a prescribed burn. Fire Management Officer Gary Lindsay says they expect to burn up to 160 acres south of the Refuge Entrance Road.

ORV group hopes digital mapping helps determine new routes
ESCANABA – A new trail organization has produced a digital map that suggests routes for ORV, snowmobile and other trails across the U.P. Right now, the Hiawathaland Trail Association is working with the U.S. Forest Service on access to the national forest.
