Upper Peninsula deer habitat improvement grants available
MARQUETTE – The application period for $50,000 in Upper Peninsula deer habitat improvement grant funding offered by the Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Division is now open, with a deadline of Friday, March 21. The Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative (DHIPI) is a cooperative grant program designed to enhance deer habitat on non-state-owned land in the Upper Peninsula.

Upper Peninsula moose population is growing at a slower rate
MARQUETTE – There are concerns about the health of the moose population in the Upper Peninsula. The culprit seems to be climate change and encroaching parasites carried by whitetail deer. Dean Beyer, a moose expert with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources said after years of growth, the population has been growing a much slower rate.

The cougars in the Upper Peninsula don’t seem to be settling here
ESCANABA – There have been 22 confirmed cougar sightings in the Upper Peninsula although DNR Wildlife Biologist Brian Roell says several of the sightings were probably of the same animal. That’s the case with two recent sightings in Marquette County.
