GWINN – A 31-year-old Sawyer man was arrested Thursday for stolen property and possession of a firearm as a felon. The Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET) says the man was charged with one count of receiving and concealing stolen property and two counts of felon in possession of a firearm.

Upper Peninsula unemployment rate shows improvement in May
MARQUETTE – Unemployment in the Upper Peninsula improved in May from 9.2 percent in April to 8.4 percent despite six U.P. counties being among the 10 worst unemployment rates in the state.

The exhibit ‘Selling Nahma’ opens at the Bonifas Fine Arts Center

Prescribed burn scheduled for Seney National Wildlife Refuge
SENEY – A portion of the Marshland Wildlife Drive at the Seney National Wildlife Refuge will be closed Friday for a prescribed burn. Fire Management Officer Gary Lindsay says they expect to burn up to 160 acres south of the Refuge Entrance Road.

Two U.P. groups call for ban of lead in ammunition used on federal lands
MARQUETTE – Two groups from the Upper Peninsula have joined a national effort to ban lead from ammunition used to hunt waterfowl on federal lands. The Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition and Chocolay Raptor Center were participated in a petition to the U.S. Department of Interior from the Humane Society of the United States asking for the use of non-lead ammunition.
