Escanaba man wins Lottery top prize
LANSING – A grocery bagger at Elmer’s County Market in Escanaba struck gold with the Michigan Lottery’s Black & Gold instant game, claiming a top prize of $500,000. Tyler Larson, 20, of Escanaba said at first he couldn’t believe his luck and checked his ticket several times before realizing he actually was holding a ticket worth $500,000.

Improvements make Delta County parks more self-sufficient, attractive
ESCANABA — Michigan’s Delta County-owned parks will open this spring to a host of improvements made in the last three to four years. The Delta County Board of Commissioners had two goals with the improvements, says vice chair Mary Harrington: (1) to make the parks financially self-sufficient; and (2) to make the parks more attractive to tourists and residents both.

Parks hopes media attention for getting ‘Yooper’ in the dictionary benefits U.P.
ESCANABA – After it was announced that the word “Yooper” was going into the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Steve Parks started receiving media calls from all over the country. Parks lobbied for 12 years to have the word added to the dictionary after losing a challenge on the word in a game of Scrabble.

West Iron County student with pink Mohawk allowed to particpate in track
IRON RIVER – The West Iron County School District and the student who was not allowed to participate in a track meet because of a pink Mohawk have reached a resolution. The school district says Mike Barker will continue to be a member of the track team.

Students receive awards in Bonifas’ annual ‘Youth in Art’ exhibit
ESCANABA – Students from 6th to 12th grade received awards last night for their artwork entered in the annual “Youth in Art” exhibit at the Bonifas Fine Arts Center in Escanaba. Gladstone freshman Kallie Hubert won an award for her artwork titled “Cornell Chickens.”
