Junior Mike Barker donned the hairdo in support of his mother battling breast cancer. After four requests to cut his hair, Barker said he was told he could not attend the school’s track meet.

Marquette Sentinels Girls Hockey Team heads to nationals
MARQUETTE – The Marquette Sentinels junior girls hockey team is headed to Amherst, New York, for the U16 AA National Championships. The team won the state championship in Dearborn on March 16. Hannah Riesland of Marquette is the goalie of the state championship team.

LANSING — The city of Gladstone earned top honors as the Michigan Municipal League’s Region 7 Community Excellence Award (CEA) winner at the League’s 2014 Capital Conference in Lansing on Tuesday, March 18. Gladstone won for its After-School Ski Hill Program.

A game of Scrabble sparks quest to include ‘Yooper’ in dictionary
ESCANABA – Holy Wah! It’s official. We are all Yoopers. We know this because we can now look up the word in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Hard to believe but the word “Yooper” had not been in the dictionary but apparently officials felt it was considered too regional. And it is no easy task to get a word in the dictionary. It took 12 years to persuade Merriam-Webster. Delta County Prosecutor Steve Parks made it his mission after trying to use the word in a game of Scrabble. “I was playing an old friend of mine in a game of Scrabble.

U.P. man holds out hope that ‘unknowns’ from USS Oklahoma can be identified
ESCANABA – Bob Valley is concerned that he is running out of options to help identify the remains of 21 sailors that died on the battleship USS Oklahoma on Dec. 7, 1941. That may end his hopes of finding his brother who is possibly buried with the remaining “unknowns.”

Youth in Art exhibit at Bonifas makes adjustments in wake of school art cuts
ESCANABA – Youth in Art awards were presented last night to students from Kindergarten through 5th grade during a packed reception at the Bonifas Fine Arts Center. Director Pasqua Warstler says they were concerned about receiving enough entries this year because of cutbacks at some area schools and the elimination of art classes, especially in the elementary grades.

Escanaba’s Dan Flynn named Charles E. Forsythe Award winner
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Dan Flynn of Escanaba has advocated for Michigan high school student-athletes both in the Upper Peninsula and throughout Michigan during his more than 40 years as a coach, official and athletic administrator. In recognition of his service, Flynn has been named the 2014 recipient of the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Charles E. Forsythe Award.
