Post commander recalls fighting whiteout conditions at accident scene on U.S. 2
GLADSTONE – Extreme whiteout conditions made responding to a 16 vehicle pileup on U.S. 2 last Friday near Garden Corners a challenge for first responders who were working to help those injured and clear damaged vehicles from highway. First Lt. Greg Cunningham with the Michigan State Police Post in Gladstone said the situation was dangerous because blowing snow made it difficult to see anything more than a few feet away.

Subzero temperatures, windchills grip Upper Peninsula
NEGAUNEE – Bitter cold once again is gripping the Upper Peninsula. The National Weather Service in Marquette says blowing snow will affect much of the U.P. especially across the Keweenaw Paninsula and east of Marquette. M-28 was closed today between Marquette and Munising because of blowing snow.

NewPage threatens to end merger with Verso Paper
NewPage Corporation is threatening to end an announced merger with Verso Paper. In a letter to Verso executives, NewPage board chairman Mark Angelson said they will re-evaluate its sale to Verso Paper Corporation and consider all of its options if the company is unable to meet the conditions of the proposed merger.

NMU students head to Honduras during Spring break to help
ESCANABA – A group of Northern Michigan University Students are spending their Spring break on a mission trip to Honduras. It is part of the U.P. Friends of Honduras program that takes groups to Honduras every year. Ellyn Oswald of BarkRiver went a trip two years ago and wanted her friends and others at NMU to have a similar experience.

MTU receives grant to fight invasive species on Great Lakes
HOUGHTON – Michigan Technological University will receive a $500-thousand grant to help prevent the spread of Eurasian watermilfoil, an invasive plant in Lakes Huron and Superior watersheds. It is one of 11 grants for a total of $5 million awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to fight invasive species in the Great Lakes region.

Whiteout conditions, multiple vehicle accident closes U.S. 2
GARDEN CORNERS – A multiple vehicle accident closed U.S 2 Friday morning between Forest Highway 13 and Garden Corners and by early afternoon whiteout conditions in Mackinac County closed the highway from St. Ignace to Worth Road. Adverse weather conditions also closed the MackinacBridge as a winter storm with strong winds moved across the eastern Upper Peninsula.

Wood pellets now in short supply in the Upper Peninsula
WILSON – There is now a shortage of wood pellet fuel as people look for alternatives to heat their homes. Chad LaFave of Wilson heats his business with pellets and sells it to other homeowners. He said people are leaving their homes because they can’t get enough fuel to keep their furnaces operating.
