ESCANABA – Dredging was completed this week at the Escanaba Harbor. Harbormaster Larry Gravatt says 14-thousand cubic yards of sand was taken out of the mouth of the harbor. The $142-thousand project was paid for by the state’s emergency dredging fund. Gravatt says it will provide better access to the harbor.

Law enforcement work together to fight growing heroin problem in Menominee, U.P.
ESCANABA – Drug trafficking across the Michigan Wisconsin border is becoming a problem for Menominee and the Upper Peninsula especially with heroin because drug dealers apparently know that they face more lenient sentencing if caught in Michigan than they do in Wisconsin.

Three arrested in joint drug task force operation
MENOMINEE – Three people were arrested last week on drug charges in Menominee as a result of an interstate heroin trafficking investigation. The arrests were made Thursday and Friday by the Menominee County Wide Drug Enforcement Team and the Northeast Tri-County Drug Enforcement Team.

BOIS BLANC ISLAND – The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is offering more than 100 parcels of state-owned land on Bois Blanc Island in Mackinac County for sale by sealed-bid auction. The auction begins today, Oct. 23, and will run through Nov. 20.

Upper Peninsula receives its first amount of significant snowfall for the season
NEGAUNEE – Parts of the Upper Peninsula are seeing the first significant snowfall of the season this morning. Meteorologist Steve Fleegel at the National Weather Service in Negaunee said some areas have as much as three inches of snow.

Iron River tree to be state’s 2013 Christmas Tree
LANSING — After months of searching far and wide across Michigan, the state’s 28th Christmas tree, a 68-foot blue spruce, was found in the northwestern reaches of the Upper Peninsula. Selected by the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget (DTMB), the tree will be delivered to the state Capitol on Saturday, Nov. 9.

Six generations operate funeral home for 150 years in Upper Peninsula
ESCANABA – Don Crawford’s Great Grandfather went to Hancock as a cabinet maker in 1863 at the start of the copper boom. He started working as an undertaker because he could make caskets. The family has continued to run the business for 150 years.
